
At Matamata Primary School our students have many opportunities to develop and excel in sport. There are a range of annual local tournaments that we participate in as a school. More recently we have travelled to other schools in the wider Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas to take part in different sports exchanges.
Throughout the year we have sports days including cross country, athletics and swimming sports.
Below is more information on the main sporting codes offered at our school. If your child/ren have a special interest in other sports, please reach out to our sports coordinator for more information.
RugbyMatamata Primary School provides our students with many opportunities to play rugby. We have annual local tournaments such as the Cotter Cup, Orr Cup and Corinthian Cup which involve our students challenging other local schools. We also offer touch and rippa rugby for our students.
More recently we have been able to participate in sports exchanges with other schools around the wider Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas.
On Saturdays our students have the opportunity to play rugby through our local clubs – United Matamata Sports and Hinuera Rugby Club. Please see the link below for further information on these clubs.
NetballAt Matamata Primary School we have a number of school teams from year 4-6 that play netball.
Our students take part in annual local tournaments such as the Cotter Cup and more recently we have played in sports exchanges around the wider Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas.
Our year 6 students also have the opportunity to make local development squads.

SoccerAt Matamata Primary School we provide our students with various opportunities to play Soccer / Football.
We participate in annual local tournaments such as the Cotter Cup. More recently our students have had the option to play in sports exchanges with other schools in the wider Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas. We are also offering other training and playing opportunities through our local club Matamata Swifts AFC.
If your child is interested in Saturday soccer this is available at the local club Matamata Swifts AFC. Please see the link below for further information.
HockeyMatamata Primary School has a number of students who represent the school in teams on Saturday mornings. This is open to all year levels.
Our students play in annual local tournaments such as the PTA Cup and more recently have taken part in sports exchanges at schools in the wider Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas.

CricketCricket at Matamata Primary School is developing . We are grateful to have parent support from previous representative players to teach our students skills and techniques.
On Friday nights in term one we have many teams entered in the T20 cricket competition organised by Matamata Cricket Association.
On a Saturday in term one and term four our students can play in teams organised by Matamata Cricket Association.

Learning to swim is an essential part of Kiwi culture. With rivers, lakes and the ocean never far faway, awareness and confidence around the water whilst enjoying water-sport is encouraged for all.

Here at Matamata Primary School we encourage full participation in our Athletics Programme from New Entrants through to our Year 6 Students.
